The Turkish Embassy in Japan is located in the city of Shibuya. For this reason, Shibuya and the Republic of Turkey have had a great deal interchange and friendship over the years. With the designation of 2003 by Japan as the Year of Turkey, a perfect opportunity has been presented to introduce Turkish culture and society to Japan through various events, and to further strengthen the friendship between the two countries. Therefore, as part of the Year of Turkey in Japan, the Shoto Museum of Art held the Aydin Dogan International Cartoon Competition Exhibition from February 12-23.

The Aydin Dogan International Cartoon Competition is a global-scale competition that receives submissions from all over the world. Held nineteen times so far, it is highly regarded for the outstanding quality of the selected works. The works submitted to this competition represented the satirical cartoon genre in which artists communicate their message in a single frame. The cartoons typically feature a concentrated, pithy world, complete in just one scene, which satirizes society and politics with biting humor and incisiveness. Since Japan is also well known for its many satirical cartoons, especially those from the Meiji period by such artists as Kitazawa Rakuten, viewers found it interesting to look and compare.

The theme for the recent competition was "terrorism", truly a most appropriate theme for communicating the present age that is so filled with tense political situations. The works were distinguished by the very high quality of their artistic expressions, which were supported by the artists' diverse techniques.

This exhibition was first held in Turkey and was then shown in Japan as part of its subsequent tour of various countries. At the Shoto Museum of Art, nearly one hundred carefully selected works were shown from among the accepted submissions.
