The visual tales of Selma Gürbüz's wandering around the world feature animal tales that are based on the traditional art of her homeland, such as shadow-plays, miniatures, carpets, etc. These tales, which have been influenced by her discoveries during numerous adventures in other cultures, enrich themselves and blossom with the urge of free expression. Through her work she enables the viewer to experience the mystical philosophy of the East, and the mischievous instincts of folk art at the same time. She uses a variety of materials, ranging from iron to hand-made paper, and uses traditional symbols like ‘the eye' and ‘the hand.' She also uses wool, keeping the natural colors of the fur of the animal, to accentuate the irony found in the fine, thin, light “kilims”.
