LERZAN ÖZER

Lerzan Özer,
is a native of Istanbul and a faculty member in the ceramics department of the Fine Arts Faculty of Mimar Sinan University, where she completed her undergraduate and graduate studies. She is represented by Gallery Apel in Turkey. The visual, sensual, and intellectual components are very well balanced in her work. The concept of “concern” is the key element of her work. Her concern for social issues is frequently reflected in her fragile works of china. Traces memories of the past are hinted on the surfaces of the individual elements. She has been an invited artist in many curated shows in and outside of Turkey. Some recent examples are “Amiens 2000-The Colors of the World”, I. International Contemporary Ceramics Symposium, Maison de la Culture d'Amiens, France(2000), “Balkan Contemporary Ceramics” Athens, Greece(2002), “Between the Waterfronts project Istanbul and Rotterdam” Gallerie Maas, Rotterdam, Holland.(2002) (Catalogue)

Using a space 8 x 5 x 3 m. from wall to wall and from floor to ceiling Özer will install hundreds of fragile fragments in the form of birds converging in a multiple V shaped composition. Each is tied individually to the ceiling by a thread of the same color with a few meaningful exceptions. These threads seem endless, forming intersecting and parallel lines in the air. A huge flock of black birds meet an equal number of white birds at the lower point of the heralded V. The piece will capture the tension of the two opposites as they are balanced and brought forth into a climax.
