THE DISCOVERY OF MUTUAL FRIENDSHIP

Formal diplomatic relations between modern Japan and Turkey started in 1923 when Japan signed the Lausanne Treaty accepting the nullity of the Treaty of Serves and recognized the Republic of Turkey in place of the Ottoman Empire which had been dismembered at the end of the First World War. Japanese-Turkish relations, however, has a much longer history that goes back to the Meiji period in Japanese history and the late Ottoman period in Turkish history, during which a mutual friendship was formed.
